Phu Lang Pottery Village

Phu Lang's pottery craft dates back to the 14th century during the Tran dynasty. Its ceramics are distinguished by their unique eel skin glazes in hues of brown, dark brown, light yellow, dark yellow, and brown-yellow. A standout feature is the embossed method, also known as double engraving, which imparts a natural, durable, and unique glaze color to the ceramics.

The raw material for Phu Lang pottery is reddish pink clay, meticulously processed and shaped by hand on a turntable. Once the product has shrunk, it is glazed with a mixture of ash from burned forest trees, quicklime, crushed gravel, and white alluvial mud. This glaze is applied with a bristle brush, dried, and then fired in a kiln.

After firing at high temperatures, the ceramics emerge with two primary glaze colors: yellow-brown and black-brown, known as eel skin glaze. Phu Lang ceramics are celebrated for their rustic, robust appearance, embodying the primal beauty of earth and fire. This quality has made them a favorite among generations of Vietnamese people for their practical uses. It is common to find soy sauce jars, eggplant jars, bowls, clay pots, and more in many households.

Phu Lang artisans, with their skilled and talented hands, now produce a variety of fine art ceramics, including pedestals, teapots, ornamental pots, flower pots, and animal figures such as dogs, pigs, fish, and dragons. These items are highly popular. Additionally, the village is known for its interior and exterior decorative ceramics, garden ceramics, art vases, and renowned ceramic paintings like Vinh Quy Bai To, lotus crane paintings, fish catching paintings, bronze countryside paintings, landscape paintings, quarter paintings, old town paintings, carp transforming into dragons, and abstract paintings.

In recent years, a new generation of artisans trained in fine arts schools has emerged, bringing fresh creativity and innovation to the craft. Their knowledge has revitalized the village, resulting in a range of fine art ceramic products such as ceramic paintings, flower vases, decorative ceramics, and wall ceramics. Consequently, Phu Lang ceramics have gained broader recognition and integration into modern life.

Phu Lang village retains many cultural features typical of an ancient Vietnamese village in the Northern Delta. Visitors can explore traces of material culture and ancient architecture, such as Cao Pagoda, Phuc Long Pagoda, ancient houses, old ceramic kiln foundations, and antique ceramic products. These cultural treasures attract a growing number of domestic and international tourists eager to experience the unique heritage of this Vietnamese cultural space.
